Indian passport photo from the USA: a 35×45 mm print for VFS
Indian citizens in the United States apply for or renew a passport through VFS Global. The current VFS checklist asks for two identical 35×45 mm photos on a white background, and you also upload a digital photo online first. CropPass makes the 35×45 mm prints here; the upload has its own page.

Official requirements ↗How to make your Indian passport photo from the USA (35×45 mm print)
- Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain white. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
- Line up the frame. CropPass crops to a 35×45 mm photo and marks where your head goes (80–85% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
- Download and print. Click "Download Indian passport from the USA (35x45 mm print)" for a 300 DPI JPEG, or download a 4×6 in or A4 sheet with several copies. Print at 100% scale so each photo comes out at 35×45 mm. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.
Questions and answers
Is it 2×2 inches or 35×45 mm?
35×45 mm for passports. Older consulate documents, such as a 2019 CGI San Francisco PDF, asked for 2×2 in (51×51 mm), but the May 2026 VFS checklist asks for 35×45 mm. Indian visas and OCI cards still use a 2×2 in photo.
How many photos do I need?
Two identical 35×45 mm prints on a white background. A CropPass print sheet holds several copies of the same photo, so cut two from one sheet.
How big should my face be?
The Ministry of External Affairs guideline says the face should take up 80–85% of the photograph. On a 45 mm tall photo, that is about 36–38 mm from chin to crown.
Do I also need a digital photo?
Yes. The Embassy of India in Washington asks you to upload a 630×810 px photo online before you mail the application to VFS. The online upload page makes that file from the same photo.
