The US Department of State has strict photo specifications. A photo that doesn't meet them is rejected, which delays your passport application. These are the rules for 2026.
Size requirements
US passport photos must be exactly 2×2 inches (51×51 mm). For digital submissions, the photo must be at least 600×600 pixels and no larger than 1200×1200 pixels, submitted as a JPEG file under 240 KB. Printed at 300 DPI, a 600×600 pixel image comes out at exactly 2×2 inches.
- Print size: 2×2 inches (51×51 mm)
- Digital: 600×600 px minimum, 1200×1200 px maximum
- File format: JPEG
- Resolution: 300 DPI recommended
Background requirements
The background must be plain white or off-white, with no patterns, shadows or other people. The background is one of the most common reasons for rejection: a slightly grey wall, a shadow behind you or a textured surface is enough to get a photo refused.
Head size and position
Measured from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head, your head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) tall in the printed photo. Keep it centered in the frame and look straight at the camera with both eyes open.
Lighting and expression
- Even, flat lighting across the face, with no harsh shadows
- No red-eye; eyes must be clearly visible
- Neutral expression with mouth closed, or a natural smile
- No glasses (as of November 2016, glasses are no longer allowed)
- No hats or head coverings unless for religious reasons
Common reasons for rejection
The State Department rejects thousands of passport photos every year. These are the most frequent problems:
- Photo is too dark or overexposed
- Shadow on the background or on the face
- Head too small or too large in the frame
- Glasses in the photo
- Background is not white enough
- Photo is blurry or out of focus
- Mouth is open or expression is exaggerated
- Hair obscures the face or ears significantly
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear makeup in my US passport photo?
Yes, everyday makeup is fine as long as it doesn't dramatically alter your appearance from how you look day-to-day.
How recent does my passport photo need to be?
Your photo must have been taken within the last 6 months and must represent your current appearance.
Can I take my own passport photo?
Yes. You can take your own passport photo at home with a smartphone, as long as the background, lighting and framing are right. CropPass then crops and resizes it to the US passport size.
