Australia passport photo requirements for 2026: size, background and rules

Australian passport photos follow the ICAO biometric standard, with some local requirements. The Australian Passport Office is strict: photos that don't meet the specifications are rejected.

Before you start: Australian passport prints must be dye-sublimation prints on glossy photo paper, not inkjet prints, and online renewal only takes a photo code from a photo provider. The Australian Passport Office also advises against online photo services and apps. For a passport, the simpler route is to have the photo taken in store, for example at Australia Post.

Size requirements

Australian passport photos must be 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall, following the ICAO standard. At 300 DPI that is 413×531 pixels. Online renewal does not take an uploaded file: it needs a photo code from a photo provider.

  • Width: 35 mm
  • Height: 45 mm
  • Digital: 413×531 px at 300 DPI
  • Printed on high-quality matte or glossy photo paper

Background requirements

The background must be plain white. Unlike the UK which prefers light grey, Australia specifically requires white. There must be no patterns, no shadows, and no other objects visible.

Head size and position

The head height, from chin to crown, must be between 32 mm and 36 mm. That is a fairly narrow range: the face should take up 71–80% of the photo height. The head must be centred and facing straight forward.

  • Head height: 32–36 mm (71–80% of frame)
  • Face centred, looking directly at the camera
  • No tilting or turning of the head
  • Even space on both sides of the face

Expression and appearance

  • Neutral expression with mouth closed
  • Both eyes open and clearly visible
  • No glasses: remove them for the photo
  • No hats, headbands, or head coverings (religious exceptions apply)
  • Hair must not obscure the face
  • Photo taken within the last 6 months
Tip: Australia is particularly strict about shadows. Light both sides of the face evenly and keep shadows off the background.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a professional photo for an Australian passport?

Not for a paper application, but the rules are strict. The prints must be dye-sublimation prints on glossy photo paper (not inkjet), and the Australian Passport Office advises against online photo services and apps. Online renewal only takes a photo code from a photo provider, so a photo you take yourself cannot be used there.

Can I smile in my Australian passport photo?

No. A neutral expression with the mouth closed is required. A slight, natural expression is sometimes accepted, but a smile or any obvious expression will be rejected.
