US passport photo for DS-11 and DS-82: a 2×2 in (51×51 mm) print

Applying in person with form DS-11, or renewing by mail with DS-82, you hand in one printed photo. It must be 2×2 inches, with the head between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from chin to crown. CropPass crops to that frame and lays copies out on a 4×6 in or A4 sheet you can print at home or at a photo counter.

How to make your US passport photo for DS-11 and DS-82 (2×2 in print)

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain white or off-white, no shadows. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Line up the frame. CropPass crops to a 2×2 in (51×51 mm) photo and marks where your head goes (50–69% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
  3. Download and print. Click "Download US passport photo (2x2 in print)" for a 300 DPI JPEG, or download a 4×6 in or A4 sheet with several copies. Print at 100% scale so each photo comes out at 2×2 in (51×51 mm). The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

Which forms need a printed 2×2 in photo?

DS-11 (a first passport, or any application made in person) and DS-82 (renewal by mail) each take one printed photo. Online renewal takes a digital file instead, which has its own page.

How tall should my head be on a 2×2 in photo?

1 to 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, which is 50–69% of the photo height. The guided frame marks that band.

What resolution should I print at?

The State Department does not state one. CropPass works at 300 DPI, which makes the 2×2 in photo exactly 600×600 px. Print the sheet at 100% scale, not "fit to page", so each photo comes out at 2×2 in.

Can the photo be retouched?

No. You must submit the original, unedited photo, without filters or digital changes. CropPass only crops and resizes it.
