UK visa photo: a JPEG of at least 600×750 px, 50 KB to 6 MB

UK Visas and Immigration asks for a digital photo of your face when you apply for a visa or permission online. It must be a portrait JPEG of at least 600×750 px between 50 KB and 6 MB, and show your head, shoulders and upper body. GOV.UK gives no head size, so CropPass keeps your whole photo, resizes it to about 1500 px tall and runs face checks before you upload.

How to make your UK visa photo

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain and light-coloured, in clear contrast to you, with no shadows. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Check the framing. CropPass keeps the whole photo, because it must show your head, shoulders and upper body. Check that they are all in the photo, hold the camera upright, and read the face checks under it.
  3. Download the file. In the download step, check that "UK visa photo (online application)" is selected and click "Download UK visa photo (online application)". CropPass resizes the whole photo to about 1500 px tall and encodes a JPEG (50 KB–6 MB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

What size does a UK visa photo need to be?

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, as a jpg or jpeg of at least 50 KB and no more than 6 MB, taken upright. CropPass keeps your photo in its own shape and resizes it to about 1500 px tall, which sits inside those limits.

Can I use the photo from my passport?

No. GOV.UK says the visa photo must not be the same photo of you that is in your passport or identity card, and must not be a scan or photo of another photo. Take a new photo of yourself.

Can I take the photo myself on my phone?

Yes. GOV.UK says the photo can be from a phone or tablet, but suggests asking another person to take it, which reduces the chance of it being rejected. It must not be mirrored or flipped, so avoid selfie mode if your phone flips the picture.

What about photos of babies and children?

Children must be alone in the photo, and babies must not hold toys or use dummies. Children under 6 do not have to look straight at the camera or keep a plain expression. A baby under one can lie on a plain light-coloured sheet, photographed from above, and does not need open eyes.
