UK online passport photo: at least 600×750 px, 50 KB to 10 MB, not cropped

The UK online passport service takes a digital photo and crops it itself. GOV.UK asks you not to crop it and to include your head, shoulders and upper body. So CropPass keeps your whole photo, resizes it to about 1500 px tall and encodes a JPEG between 50 KB and 10 MB, with face checks to catch problems before you upload.

How to make your UK online passport photo

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain and light-coloured, in clear contrast to you, with no shadows. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Check the framing. CropPass keeps the whole photo, because it must show your head, shoulders and upper body. Check that they are all in the photo, hold the camera upright, and read the face checks under it.
  3. Download the file. In the download step, check that "UK passport (online application)" is selected and click "Download UK passport (online application)". CropPass resizes the whole photo to about 1500 px tall and encodes a JPEG (50 KB–10 MB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

What size does a digital UK passport photo need to be?

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between 50 KB and 10 MB. CropPass keeps your whole photo in its own shape and resizes it to about 1500 px tall, well above the minimum and inside the file size limits.

Why does CropPass not crop the UK online photo?

GOV.UK says "Do not crop your photo - it will be done for you" and asks for your head, shoulders and upper body. So CropPass exports the whole photo, only resized, and checks that your whole head is in it with room below for your shoulders.

Who should take the photo?

Someone else. GOV.UK says you will need someone to help you take the photo during your application. Photos from a booth or shop come with a code instead, and GOV.UK says they are more likely to be accepted than photos taken on your own device.

Can I remove shadows from the background?

Not for the online application. GOV.UK asks for a photo unaltered by computer software, so CropPass turns background cleanup off for this document. Cleanup is offered only for the standard UK photo, and only on a wall that is already plain and light.
