Canada IEC work permit photo (JPEG, at least 420×540 px)

An International Experience Canada (IEC) work permit application asks for a digital photo of yourself, uploaded with your other documents. IRCC sets a minimum pixel size, a file size and a 35×45 mm frame with your head 31–36 mm tall, and does not ask for a photographer. CropPass crops your photo to that frame and exports a JPEG inside the file size window.

How to make your Canada IEC work permit photo

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain white or light-coloured, as for every IRCC visa photo. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Line up the frame. CropPass crops to the 7:9 shape of the file and marks where your head goes (69–80% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
  3. Download the file. In the download step, check that "Canada IEC work permit photo (online upload)" is selected and click "Download Canada IEC work permit photo (online upload)". CropPass encodes a 630×810 px JPEG (60–240 KB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

What size is the IEC work permit photo?

At least 420×540 pixels, in a frame of at least 35×45 mm with your head 31–36 mm from chin to crown, as a 24-bit colour JPEG (or JPEG2000). IRCC says the file should ideally be about 240 KB and not under 60 KB, so CropPass exports 630×810 px and keeps the JPEG between 60 KB and 240 KB.

Do I need a photographer for the IEC photo?

No. The IEC page asks for a digital photo of yourself and names no photographer. Canadian passport, PR card and citizenship photos are different: those must come from a commercial photographer or studio, so CropPass does not make them.

Can I use this file for a visitor visa or study permit?

IRCC's visitor visa photo rules use the same frame of at least 35×45 mm, the same 31–36 mm head and a plain white or light-coloured background, but they give no pixel or file size limits for an upload. Many applicants also give biometrics, where the photo is taken at the collection point. Check what your own IRCC application asks for before you use this file there.

Can I retouch the photo or remove the background?

No. IRCC's visa photo rules say digital photos must not be altered in any way, so CropPass only crops and resizes this file and leaves background cleanup off. Take the photo against a plain white or light-coloured wall instead.
