Nigerian passport photo upload (at least 600×800 px, up to 2 MB)
A Nigerian passport application, at home or abroad, starts on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal, where you upload a colour photo that the portal says will be printed on your passport. The upload refuses images under 600×800 px or over 2 MB, so the 413×531 px file of a standard 35×45 mm photo is too small for it. CropPass exports a 630×810 px JPEG in the 35×45 mm shape the portal crops to, from your own photo.

How to make your Nigerian passport photo upload (at least 600×800 px)
- Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain white, with no shadows on you or the wall. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
- Line up the frame. CropPass crops to the 7:9 shape of the file and marks where your head goes (64–69% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
- Download the file. In the download step, check that "Nigerian passport (online photo upload)" is selected and click "Download Nigerian passport (online photo upload)". CropPass encodes a 630×810 px JPEG (75 KB–2 MB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.
Questions and answers
What photo file does the NIS passport portal accept?
A JPG, JPEG or PNG image of at least 600×800 pixels and no more than 2 MB. The portal then crops it in a fixed frame shaped like a 35×45 mm photo and runs its own ICAO compliance check, which decides whether the photo is accepted. CropPass exports a 630×810 px JPEG in that shape, so the crop keeps the whole photo.
Why does the portal refuse my 35×45 mm photo file?
At 300 DPI a 35×45 mm photo is 413×531 pixels, below the 600×800 px minimum, so the portal stops the upload with an image dimensions error. Use this file for the upload and keep the 35×45 mm photo for prints: for a first passport, adults also hand in 2 printed passport photos that their guarantor signs on the back, and a child hands in 1 signed on the back by a parent.
How big should my head be in the NIS photo?
The portal guidelines give 50–69% of the image height from the top of the hair to the chin, with the eyes 56–69% up from the bottom. Those figures come from the rules for a square 2×2 in photo, and in the 35×45 mm frame a head at 50% looks small, so CropPass frames your head at 64–69% of the height: inside the stated range and close to the usual size for a 35×45 mm photo.
Can I wear glasses or smile in a Nigerian passport photo?
No. The guidelines say eyeglasses are no longer allowed in passport photos and ask for a neutral expression with both eyes open and the mouth closed. The photo must not be digitally altered either, so CropPass only crops and resizes it. At your appointment the office also takes your photo and biometrics.
