Irish Passport Online photo: a JPEG of at least 715×951 px, up to 9 MB

Ireland's Passport Online service takes a digital photo instead of prints. The Department of Foreign Affairs sets a minimum pixel size and a 9 MB limit, and asks for a clean image with no compression artefacts. CropPass exports a 1080×1440 px JPEG at high quality, in the 3:4 shape of the minimum size.

How to make your Irish Passport Online photo

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain light grey, white or cream. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Line up the frame. CropPass crops to the 3:4 shape of the file and marks where your head goes (40–55% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
  3. Download the file. In the download step, check that "Irish passport (Passport Online)" is selected and click "Download Irish passport (Passport Online)". CropPass encodes a 1080×1440 px JPEG (up to 9 MB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

What are the size limits for a Passport Online photo?

At least 715 pixels wide and 951 pixels high, as a JPEG of no more than 9 MB. There is no lower file size, but the image must be free of compression artefacts, so CropPass starts at a high JPEG quality and only lowers it if the file would pass 9 MB.

How much of me should be in the photo?

The guidelines give no head size. They ask for your head down to mid torso, with visible space around your head and shoulders. CropPass frames your head at about 40–55% of the height, like the example of a good photo in the guidelines; check the preview against them before you upload.

Can I edit or retouch the photo?

No. The photo must not be digitally enhanced or changed, so CropPass only crops and resizes it and leaves background cleanup off.
