French passport and ID card photos must come from an authorised photographer or an accredited booth

Photos for French passports and ID cards must be taken by an authorised professional photographer or in a photo booth using an approved system. A photo you take and print yourself is not accepted.

Why CropPass can't make this photo

CropPass works on a photo you took yourself, inside your browser. For a French passport or ID card, the printed photo you hand in at the mairie has to come from an authorised professional photographer or from a photo booth that uses a system accredited by the Interior Ministry. A photo made with CropPass is neither, so CropPass does not offer this document.

What to do instead

  1. Go to an authorised photographer or an accredited photo booth. ANTS lists the photographers and booths that qualify. Ask for a passport or ID card photo, and apply within 6 months of the day it was taken.
  2. Applying at a French consulate abroad? The same rule applies there. In a country with no accredited photographers or booths, consulates accept a photo from any professional photographer.
  3. Applying for a Schengen visa to visit France? Visa applicants hand in a printed 35×45 mm photo, which CropPass can make. Schengen visa photo →

Questions and answers

Can I take my own photo for a French passport?

No. service-public.gouv.fr says the photo must be taken by an authorised professional or in a booth using an accredited system, so a photo taken at home and printed is not accepted. The same applies to the ID card.

What does a French passport photo look like?

It is 35×45 mm, with the face 32–36 mm from the chin to the top of the skull (hair not counted), on a plain light background such as light blue or light grey. White is not allowed, and the photo must be less than 6 months old.

Can I upload the photo with my ANTS pre-application?

No. The online pre-application (pré-demande) has no photo upload. You bring one printed photo from an authorised photographer or an accredited booth to your appointment at the mairie.

What can CropPass make for France?

The 35×45 mm Schengen visa photo for people visiting France. French passports and ID cards need a photo from an authorised photographer or an accredited booth, so CropPass makes nothing for them.
