Spanish passport photo from abroad: a 35×45 mm print with the head at 50%
Spanish citizens who live abroad apply for or renew their passport at a Spanish consulate. Consulates such as Berlin and Düsseldorf ask for two identical colour photos 30–40 mm wide and 40–53 mm tall, with the head (face and hair) at 50% of the photo. CropPass makes that photo as a 35×45 mm print. In Spain itself the photo is smaller, 26×32 mm, and the Spain page makes that one.

How to make your Spanish passport photo from abroad (35×45 mm print)
- Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: plain, uniform white, without shadows. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
- Line up the frame. CropPass crops to a 35×45 mm photo and marks where your head goes (45–55% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
- Download and print. Click "Download Spanish passport from abroad (35x45 mm print)" for a 300 DPI JPEG, or download a 4×6 in or A4 sheet with several copies. Print at 100% scale so each photo comes out at 35×45 mm. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.
Questions and answers
Why is this photo bigger than the one for a passport in Spain?
In Spain, Royal Decree 896/2003 asks for a 32×26 mm photo: 32 mm tall and 26 mm wide. Spanish consulates abroad accept a larger photo, 30–40 mm wide and 40–53 mm tall, so a 35×45 mm print fits their rule. If you apply in Spain, use the 26×32 mm photo on the Spain page instead.
How big should my head be on a Spanish consulate photo?
The consulates ask for the head, face and hair together, to fill 50% of the photo, with at least 5 mm of space at the sides and above it, and the top of the shoulders in the picture. On a 45 mm tall photo that is about 22.5 mm from chin to the top of the hair. Berlin warns that this differs from German passport photos, where the head is much bigger. CropPass frames the head at 45–55% of the height and keeps at least 5 mm above it.
Can I use a photo booth for a Spanish passport abroad?
Not in Berlin: its checklist says photo-booth prints are not valid and asks for photos of professional quality and high resolution. Print the CropPass file at a photo lab on good photo paper, at 100% scale. The consulate decides whether it accepts the photo, so check its own checklist if you apply somewhere else.
How many photos do I need, and how recent?
Two identical colour photos, taken within the last 6 months. A CropPass print sheet holds several copies of the same photo, so you can cut both from one sheet.
