China visa photo (354×472 px JPEG, 40 to 120 KB)

China's online visa application takes a digital photo with tight limits: a small pixel range and a 40–120 KB file. For applicants in the United States, the online system has been at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA since 30 September 2025. CropPass exports a 354×472 px JPEG and adjusts its quality until the file lands in that window.

How to make your China visa photo upload

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera in even light, against a wall that fits the background rule: white or near-white, no border. Upload it as a JPEG, PNG or HEIC file; it stays on your device.
  2. Line up the frame. CropPass crops to the 3:4 shape of the file and marks where your head goes (58–69% of the height). Drag and zoom until your head sits inside the guides.
  3. Download the file. In the download step, check that "China visa (online application upload)" is selected and click "Download China visa (online application upload)". CropPass encodes a 354×472 px JPEG (40–120 KB) and shows its final size, ready to upload. The preview is free; downloading needs a pass.

Questions and answers

What are the China visa photo limits?

A JPEG 354 to 420 pixels wide and 472 to 560 pixels high, between 40 KB and 120 KB, in 24-bit RGB colour, on a white or near-white background with no border.

How does CropPass hit the 40–120 KB window?

It encodes the JPEG, checks the size and changes the quality until the file fits. If a very plain photo still comes out under 40 KB, CropPass pads the file without changing the picture.

What head size does a China visa photo need?

No head size is given for the digital photo. CropPass uses the printed Chinese photo rule instead: a head 28–33 mm tall on a 48 mm photo, which is 58–69% of the height.

Can I get prints from this page too?

This document is upload-only. For 33×48 mm prints, choose the standard China photo in the download step and download a print sheet.
